Friends of the Big Sur Coast was established in 1979, at the Big Sur Grange Hall in Big Sur, California, USA. The organization lobbies at the local, state and federal levels on behalf of property owners, residents, and friends who want to see the coast remain the free and welcoming home its founding families envisioned. Big Sur draws many, but keeps few. Its Coast and the harsh shelter of the Santa Lucia Mountains have long been a haven for artists, writers, ranchers, farmers, inn keepers, and the extraordinary cross section that is America. The Big Sur Community demographic changes as surely as the wind, but the caring people who live here in this exceptional beauty, whether property owners, renters, pioneer families, rangers, or seasonal employees, take pride in their role as stewards. We ask the same of our visitors, those fortunate enough to travel here and share with us one of the most breathtaking highways in the world. Use your litter bags and our trash containers. Use your ash trays, if you must smoke. Better yet, make this the place you quit—if for no other reason than to be energized by the salt air and sagebrush.
Help Us Keep Big Sur Beautiful.
